Icicles may be beautiful, but they can be a symptom of an ugly problem.

It’s that time of year again. For those of us who live in areas prone to snow, this means snow covering our streets and icicles dangling from our rooftops. While most of us enjoy the sight, in truth, these icicles are not a very good sign.

Before setting up a meeting with your roofing contractors in Denver this winter, it’s good to know the following:

Icicles are caused by “ice dams,” or a buildup of ice along the eaves (or overhang) of your roof. Unchecked, they can tear off gutters and loosen the shingles of your roof.

Ice dams occur when snow melts and then refreezes at the roof edges. What makes the snow melt in the first place is warm air leaking through the attic. The warmth creates meltwater, which later trickles back under the shingles and leaks through your roof.

This phenomenon is the primary culprit for swelling ceilings and stained walls. It also causes your paint to peel off and exposes various parts of your home to rotting, mildew and mold.

There are both temporary and lasting fixes to the problems caused by ice dams, but the general idea is to keep the attic cold at all times. This prevents the snow from melting and eventually forming dams.

A simpler solution is to remove accumulated snow from the roof before it starts melting. This could be done with a snow rake, at least on single-story houses.

You may also install heat tapes (also called heat wires or heat cables). Install them in a zigzag pattern on the surface of the roof just above the eaves. Plug the tape to an outdoor electrical system to warm up the wires. This should create pathways in the ice for water to run off so it doesn’t accumulate on your roof.
